Learn more about how Amelia’s collagaraphs are made
-
Find some thick and thin card
-
Cut out a design from the thin card
-
Apply PVA to the thick card surface - this is the base of the collagraph plate
-
Paste down the thin card design
-
PVA can also be used as a way of adding texture to the plate
-
Trim the finished plate down to size
-
Varnish the plate with a matte polyurethane or acrylic varnish
-
Work oil-based etching ink well into the plate
-
Wipe off the excess ink - this will reveal the design
-
Polish the plate with some smooth paper
-
For chine-collé, cut out some coloured or patterned paper and apply a water-based glue to the reverse side
-
Lay the chine-collé coloured side down, on to the inked plate
-
Soak some paper in water
-
Blot the soaked paper
-
Place the plate on the bed of the press and lay the dampened paper on top
-
Pass the plate, chine-colle and damp paper through the press
-
Remove the paper and reveal the print!
-
Extra colour can be added post-print
